Chinatown |
"After California
achieved statehood in 1850, the first census recorded two Chinese house
servants living in Southern California. Since that time the Chinese
people have been a vital component of the social, industrial, agricultural
and commercial fabric of the region - especially in Los Angeles. The
area in Downtown that we know as Chinatown - Bernard Street on the
north and Cesar E. Chavez Avenue on the south, North Spring Street
on the east and Yale Street on the west, is merely a colorful icon.
Its paper lanterns and neon lights shroud the historic, sometimes contentious
relationship between the city and the Chinese." - Toni Martinez-Burgoyne full story |
